Reuse Water with Graywater!
The rain is a welcome respite this winter, but California remains a drought-prone state. Graywater is a low-cost, simple way to make your home resilient in our changing climate. The water that flows from your sinks, shower, and washing machine can be diverted to irrigate your yard. Come learn about common and popular graywater systems and how to choose a system that is a good match for your home and landscape.
This class will cover:
Overview of water supply system Common types of systems and parts needed Plant-friendly soaps and products General costs & water-saving potential Ways to reuse graywater (covers plumbing code) Design considerations Graywater resources Register online to guarantee a spot. This graywater event series is a collaboration between EBMUD, Ecology Center, and Greywater Action. Class attendees may also wish to participate in a hands-on residential graywater installation, scheduled  3/18/17 - visit  EcoCalendar for separate listing and registration.

Fast Mead Making
2/12/2017 10:00:00 PM UTC - 2/13/2017 1:00:00 AM UTC
Posted By: BioFuel Oasis Cooperative
While traditional meads take a year (or more) to age and be drinkable, there is rising interest in making meads that are reliably drinkable within a few months and that will be our focus. Lower alcohol meads are drinkable in a couple of weeks. These meads allow you to experiment without having to wait. Jim will guide you through a participatory demonstration of mead-making. You will learn about what equipment you need, how to prepare must (unfermented mead), what flavors work well together, fermentation, sanitation, and bottling. There will be a tasting of some of Jim’s meads along the way.

Instructor: Jim Veitch is a Berkeley beekeeper who has been making fast mead for the last 2 years and experimenting with different delicious recipes, including ginger, galangal, dry wine mead, and more.

Location: Sticky Art Lab, 1682 University Ave (at McGee), Berkeley
Cost: $40 class
Optional: additional $30 materials fee (covering honey, airlock, 1-gallon glass carboy) to take fermenting mead home = $70 total

Backyard Beekeeping
2/12/2017 6:00:00 PM UTC - 2/12/2017 9:00:00 PM UTC
Posted By: BioFuel Oasis Cooperative
Honeybees are a joy to keep in the backyard simply for their buzzing presence and, on hot days, the smell of honey, wafting through the air within ten feet of the hive. They increase pollination in your yard and therefore increase your yields from fruit trees and vegetables. You may also harvest honey (gallons per year), beeswax, pollen, and propolis from the hive. We’ll cover what you need to know to feel ready to have a Langstroth backyard beehive – how to get bees, what equipment you need, where to put the hive, how to extract honey and upkeep the hive. There will be local honey to try.

Instructor: Jennifer Radtke has been keeping bees in her backyard for 12 years, and has developed the beekeeping education program at the Oasis. She is vice-president of the Alameda Co Beekeeping Association.

People walk, bike, skate and dance and play. Everyone from businesses and community organizations to musicians and artists use the space creatively, engaging the public and providing spontaneity and discovery.

Sunday Streets Berkeley takes place on Shattuck Ave for 17 blocks from Rose Street to Haste Street. It is a celebration of local businesses and organizations. Storefronts and business owners will be  setting out seating on the street, hosting activities, and otherwise inviting interest and community.

Medicine Buddha Weekend Retreat
10/6/2016 5:24:00 PM UTC
Posted By: Nyingma Institute
It is said that simply hearing the Medicine Buddha’s name and his mantra brings forth powerful blessings for the healing of body and mind. Medicine Buddha practice is for healing and releasing all kinds of accumulated negativity or impurities, including trauma and long-term illnesses. It also works on a subtle level to help cleanse and purify layers of imbalanced emotionality and confusion, removing all sickness, obstacles, traces of negative actions, and obscurations. By practicing and chanting together as a group, we support each other and strengthen the power of our practice. The blessings of this practice can be directed towards:  yourself; loved ones such as family, friends, or pets; and all beings in need of healing. The Medicine Buddha workshop is a two-day residential retreat held under the guidance of Lama Palzang. You and a small, intimate group of students will receive instructions for and engage in practice sessions with mantra and visualizations of the Medicine Buddha. This retreat is approximately ¼ instruction and ¾ practice, and includes some relaxation practices to help the body and mind settle, while consisting mainly of chanting and visualization. Please feel free to bring photographs of relatives and friends who are ill or dying, or simply to add their names under the Medicine Buddha mandala which Lama Palzang will set up for this retreat. If you would like, you can also bring a flower to offer as a symbol of purity and an open heart.

To read much more.. Registration and Cost - Online registration $450 - This fee includes tuition, meals, lodging, and tax. $300 - This is for non-residential participants, who attend sessions and receive meals, but are not staying at our facilities.

Nyingma Institute Presents:

LIVING AND AGING WELL Free Events Celebrating the Nyingma Institute 43rd Anniversary Classes: Monday to Friday, September 28–October 2, 7–7:45 PM & 8–9 PM Workshop: Saturday, October 3, 10–AM–4:45 PM Open House: Sunday, October 4, 3–4:30 PM Special talk: Sunday, October 4, 6–7 PM The Institute was founded by Tibetan master and visionary Tarthang Tulku in September of 1972. We are celebrating this anniversary with a series of free events which include a week of classes, a Saturday workshop, and a Sunday open house and talk to which our students, supporters, and the general public are invited. The focus of the series is on how we grow, and grow old, in ways that increase well-being and continue to reveal value and meaning. In particular, we look at how we can carry the benefits of meditation and other teachings that the Nyingma Institute is well-known for with us as we age, even as we pass from this life.

These events and classes are free and open to the public.   Monday, September 28: 7–7:45 PM: “Living (Well) with Impermanence” with Sylvia Gretchen Coming to terms with impermanence is much more than an acceptance of change, illness, old age, and death. It is the full engagement with this moment of time and taking full responsibility for who we are right now. This is the only moment when we can change-neither the future nor the past are available to us: thinking that we will make positive changes in the future is just wishful thinking. Now is the time to honestly look at who we are. Through fully understanding impermanence we gain the knowledge and power to take full responsibility for our lives. 8–9 PM: “Maintaining the Loving Heart” with Olivia Hurd The attitudes that we form now (positive or negative) go with us as we age, often becoming more fixed and inflexible in our older years. This class presents classic Buddhist meditations that help us maintain a loving heart and compassionate wishes toward others through subtle shifts in attitudes and thoughts. Developing these positive habits of mind enriches the very fabric of our inner experience, creating a basis for constructive engagement with others.   Tuesday, September 29: 7–7:45 PM: “Breath and Awareness Practice” with Mark Henderson Breathing practices can awaken joyful, positive feelings even when we are unable to get around easily. Coupled with awareness practices they can ease discomfort, sustaining a sense of well-being and ease. 8–9 PM: “Making the Most of Transitions” with Barr Rosenberg The transitions we face as we age can be times of great sadness, but they can also be appreciated and even welcomed as opportunities for progress on the spiritual path. This class explores how transitions rend the armor of illusory self-images, helping us discern our true nature.   Wednesday, September 30: 7–7:45 PM: “Tibetan Yoga for Every Age” with Jack van der Meulen We focus on Tibetan Yoga practices that can be performed even when movement is limited. 8–9 PM: “Healing Time” with Ken McKeon When we dive into time itself, pain loses its sharpness. Time, Space, and Knowledge practices provide the means for deep healing.   Thursday, October 1: 7–7:45 PM: “Meditations for the Time of Death” with Sylvia Gretchen Classic Buddhist meditations that help reduce fear and prepare for the time of death. 8–9 PM: “Finding Serenity in the Midst of Change” with Hugh Joswick Challenge yourself to bring the meditation mind into mildly difficult situations such as an unexpected change in plans. Later, with practice, the serenity of meditation can be channeled into even the most difficult changes.   Friday, October 2: 7–7:45 PM: “Techniques for Managing Pain” with Santosh Philip & Olivia Hurd Practices from Nyingma Psychology and Tibetan Yoga help us manage chronic and acute pain. 8–9 PM: “Releasing Stress” with Santosh Philip Many stresses arise as we age, including grief and inevitable loss. This class presents techniques that relieve stress, allowing us to respond to difficulties with less anxiety and fear.   Saturday, October 3: 10 AM–4:45 PM: “Healing through Sound” Workshop “If you are very silent and alert, you may hear a beautiful, soft music in your body-a sort of silent music between thoughts.” Tarthang Tulku, Openness Mind. There is an art of deep listening that hears all sounds as music and recognizes a vast healing silence at the very heart of all sound. This workshop blends music, mantra, and silence to awaken the healing power of sound. Instructors: Nyingma Institute faculty. (Prior registration required for this workshop.)   Sunday, October 4: 3–4:30 PM: Open House Learn about the history and teachings at the Nyingma Institute, tour its grounds, and meet faculty and staff members. 6-7 PM: Talk on “Transitions as Teachers” with Sylvia Gretchen Tibetan Buddhists have developed many powerful practices to help us during times of transitions, including the time of death. All of them are alike in recognizing the immense power of our mind-thoughts, attitudes, and openness-to shape experience. The co-dean of the Nyingma Institute, Sylvia Gretchen, will discuss how these practices can become part of a lifelong training and cultivation. In short, dying well results from living well. Berkeley photographers David Garnick and Barrie Rokeach present a joint show of photographs featuring the new eastern span of the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge. David Garnick's landscapes and close-ups of the bridge make visual references to classical works of art and are printed to emulate the style of early 20th century liithographs. Barrie Rokeach documented the dramatic construction of the new span from the air.

Meet the artists at the opening reception, September 9, 5-7 pm

The artists present free public lectures on their work:

Sustainable Bliss: A Paradigm Shift, by Pesach Dahvid Stadlin

Sustainable Bliss is a celebration of the great mystery and the great questions about the great "what's going on." It has been called a worldly Jewish "Be Here Now" for seekers of all stripes.

Come on a Siddhartha-like quest across the Americas on the "Topsy Turvy Jewish Climate Change Bus," and join an activist tree-sit hundreds of feet aloft in a redwood forest slated to be clear-cut. The short essays in Stadlin's memoir bring us into extraordinary adventures, from life in a riverside Guatemalan orphanage to wartime in Israel, running for cover from searing shards of missile-rain and learning to pray for peace. Most importantly, this book promises to take you to places inside yourself that may be waiting to be explored.

Bio:
Pesach Dahvid Stadlin aims to be a servant of creator and creation, currently living as a Rabbinical student in Jerusalem. He is Spiritual Director of Eden Village Camp. For many years he worked for the Elijah Interfaith Institute and, prior to that, the Teva Learning Alliance. He is a Jerusalem Peacemaker, song leader, and spiritual wilderness guide. Outsmarting Varroa Mites
8/24/2016 8:00:00 PM UTC - 8/24/2016 11:00:00 PM UTC
Posted By: BioFuel Oasis Cooperative
Varroa mites are likely the primary cause of colony collapse disorder and bee population decline. If their level gets too high, your hive can die within 2 months from the many different viruses that they transmit. The instructor will share her year-round plan for mite management. We’ll open up a live bee hive and demonstrate detection and preventative measures (including the sugar roll test and drone comb frames), so you will be prepared to do it in your own hive in the next couple months. We will cover organic treatment methods like drone comb frames, oxalic & formic acid treatment, and caging the queen. Everyone, from new beekeepers to those with years of experience, will find this class invaluable.
Instructor: Jennifer Radtke has been keeping bees in her backyard in Oakland for 11 years. After her hives died in 2010/2011 from varroa mites, she has been tracking and managing mite levels and successfully overwintering hives multiple years.

2 Great Ways to Learn about Buddhist Psychology
6/9/2016 3:00:00 AM UTC - 8/12/2016 4:30:00 AM UTC

Nyingma psychology offers unique insight into the human situation and innovative ways to ease emotional distress. Transforming Negative Emotions Mondays, 8–9:30 PM (June 6–August 8) Introspective practices and insights from the Buddhist tradition can transform the destructive power of “everyday” negative emotions. Mindfulness and analytic meditations provide specific antidotes to anger, fear, anxiety, and attachment. Cost: $162. Instructor: Sylvia Gretchen. No class will be held on July 4. Open to all levels of students.   Wholeness and Wellness on the Spiritual Path in the Modern World Thursdays, 1–2:30 PM (June 9–August 11) “While the goodness of Being is universal, unless we cultivate it, we may be unable to participate meaningfully in the joy that goodness brings into a human life.” Tarthang Tulku, TNMC Annals, Volume Six. Perhaps the greatest challenge we face in the world today is staying in touch with the living spiritual values that are basic to our humanity. So many activities foster distraction from goodness and the illusion that “one more thing” will be the key to our well-being. This class is about tapping into the resources of Being that are already at hand, or we could say in mind. Meditation, in all its many forms, will guide our inquiry, while insights from Nyingma Psychology and Buddhist teachings help reshape outworn attitudes, penetrating the hard shell of dogma and dichotomy. A wholeness and wellness emerges that takes us to the heart of the spiritual path, to our own true heart. Our goal is no less than to make each moment a celebration of blessing and infinite joy as well as a path toward the wisdom of the unbounded fullness of Being. The class will include discussion of how to live and work in a dynamic spiritual community dedicated to finding wholeness and wellness. Cost: $180, which includes the “Contemplating Awakened Heart” workshop on August 12–13. Instructor: Sylvia Gretchen. Based on Tarthang Tulku’s “Wholeness and Wellness on the Spiritual Path,” from the Nyingma Annals. No class will be held on July 7. Open to all students.

How to do a Hive Inspection
7/23/2016 8:00:00 PM UTC - 7/23/2016 10:00:00 PM UTC
Posted By: BioFuel Oasis Cooperative
Learn how simple it is to do a thorough hive inspection! Whether you’ve never gone down into your brood boxes before or are a new beekeeper this year, this is a great class to learn what everything looks like in your hive and how to use all the tools properly to least upset the bees (read: not get stung). We will go into a hive and show what everything looks like: eggs, larvae, capped worker/drone brood, capped honey, and pollen. You’ll learn how to assess if your hive is the right size for the amount of bees and if you have a fertile, laying queen. This is a great second class to take (after Backyard Beekeeping) to get real experience with the bees present.
Instructor: Jennifer Radtke has been keeping bees in her backyard for 11 years, and has developed the beekeeping education program at the Oasis. She is vice-president of the Alameda Co Beekeeping Association.

Cost: $30

Location: a backyard hive in Berkeley/Oaklnd TBA as the class date approaches

Transforming Emotions Retreat

Emotions influence much of our lives. Yet, we may feel that we have little control over negative emotions and little understanding of how and why they arise. Negative thoughts and emotions just seem to pop up, sometimes very unexpectedly, creating confusion and causing us to suffer. This retreat will challenge the hold that negative emotions have over us through potent meditations that pacify emotions without suppressing them. First, we balance and clear the mind; then we develop insight into how emotions take hold; and then we apply techniques that transform the negative aspect of emotional energy. The final day of retreat will be devoted to Tibetan Yoga (Kum Nye) practices that help balance emotions. Cost: $470 (nonresidential, meals included); $700 (residential, six nights room and board). Retreat begins Monday, 10 AM and concludes Saturday, 4:45 PM. Primary Instructor: Olivia Hurd. Includes the “Balancing Emotions through Tibetan Yoga.” Suitable for all levels of students.

ART FOR PRAYER AND PEACE: A BRIDGE TO ONENESS
with Aimee Golant
Sunday, June 26
3:00 - 4:00pm

Aimee Golant will be speaking about an amazing project she is in the midst of creating called  Art for Prayer and Peace: A Bridge to Oneness. This interactive and evocative exhibit has, according to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the "potential for contributing to religious harmony and peace."    Aimee was inspired by her experience, through travel and study, of the universality of diverse religious concepts. This universality is found in shared symbols, imagery and sound. Aimee embarked on a journey to express these shared links and commonality between religions and cultures through art and ritual objects.    She will discuss her greater vision for the ritual objects that honor this connection. Some of the pieces from the collection will be on display at the event, including the Torah and it's 'Oneness' accouterments. Art for Prayer and Peace is endorsed by both  His Holiness the Dalai Lama and  Pope Francis.    Come learn about this amazing project as it unfolds

His project "No Status" is made up of a series of paintings routed to show the journey of the author when he decided to emigrate to the United States. The works are a representation of the basic act of looking to heaven for guidance, whether in geographical, philosophical, psychological, spiritual or religious orders. For the artist, the sky is part of human cosmogony and an extension of the psyche.
